Bachelder's view portrays Manchester as seen from the north, with the Merrimack River and Amoskeag Falls in the foreground. Just behind the Falls one can make out a segment of the city's extensive canal and lock system. Narrative content is provided by a vignette of a party of men struggling to haul out a large piece of timber trapped in the Falls.
